It could be sarcoptic or Demadex. Sarcoptic is contagious to humans as well as other dogs. Wash your hands and stuff until you find out for sure. You could give him benadryl. You would need to give him childrens benadryl. The dose is 1 tablet per 25 lbs. Soem dogs get sleepy while others may become hyper. It is usually safe for dogs but when you give it to him for the first time just watch him to make sure he does not have a bad reaction to it. I have never had a problem with it before though. Mange is so terrible for dogs and I am very thankful to hear that you are going to help him. I wish more people were like you.
Sarcoptic mange is like Scabies to people and it can be cured, which means that once all the mites are gone they do not come back unless they are recontacted.
Demodex is a hereditary mange. This means that the mother or father carried this disease. Every living thing has mites on it's skin even humans. These mites keep our skin clean by eating the dead skin and other microbes. In a dog that has Demodex, their immune system does not keep these mites controlled. So the mites end up doing more damage then good. So in other words, Demodex is more of an immune difficiency than a skin condition. Demodex is not curable. Treatment will kill the mites and keep them at bay. Treatment is with 6 dips or more untill a skin scrape shows all mites dead. Later the owner should keep an eye out for more outbreaks. If an outbreak is caught early the dog may only need oral medication, another dip, or a medicated shampoo to retreat. Demodex may always reappear after treatment.
To the Vet Tech- I am also a Vet tech and I have personally seen a white boxer who had Demodex so bad that his skin literally sluffed off in my hands. He looked like the “Resident Evil” Dobermans. This dog was in such agony that we couldn't even do the medicated baths on him. When he barked his face would crack and shoot blood. So in other words, Demodex can be just as itchy and painful as Sarcoptic.
