What over-the-counter medicines are good for lowering high blood pressure?… by little_frie

Is it true that cod liver oil helps?

Best Answer:

If you haven't already done this, it's also a good idea to talk with your doctor about all of the prescription and over-the-counter medicines you take. Some, including common pain relievers and decongestants, can elevate blood pressure.

Research studies have shown that the following strategies can lead to modest but lasting decreases in blood pressure. The payoff is big: Healthy blood pressure reduces your risk of stroke, heart failure and kidney disease.

1. Exercise regularly. Exercise is powerful medicine. Walking briskly for 30 minutes to 45 minutes, five or six days a week, can lower your blood pressure up to 10 points. We recommend combining an aerobic activity that you enjoy

What are some of the side effects of chemotherapy?… by joeynka

March 9, 2007 · Filed Under aloxi · Comment

Can anything be done to mitigate the side effects?

Best Answer:

The information below should be helpful, but I suggest looking at multiple resources such as:

http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=176

http://www.cancer.org/docroot/MBC/content/MBC_2_1x_Managing_Side_Effects_of_Chemotherapy.asp?sitearea=MBC

http://www.insidedisease.com/cancer-therapies/chemotherapy.html

Side-effects

The treatment can be physically exhausting for the patient. Current chemotherapeutic techniques have a range of side effects mainly affecting the fast-dividing cells of the body. Important common side-effects include (dependent on the agent):

* Hair loss
* Nausea and vomiting
* Diarrhea or constipation
* Anemia
* Malnutrition
* Depression of the immune system hence (potentially lethal) infections and sepsis
* Hemorrhage
* Secondary neoplasms
* Cardiotoxicity
* Hepatotoxicity
* Nephrotoxicity
* Ototoxicity
* Death

Immunosuppression and myelosuppression

Virtually all chemotherapeutic regimens can cause depression of the immune system, often by paralysing the bone marrow and leading to a decrease of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. The latter two, when they occur, are improved with blood transfusion. Neutropenia (a decrease of the neutrophil granulocyte count below 0.5 x 109/litre) can be improved with synthetic G-CSF (granulocyte-colony stimulating factor, e.g. filgrastim, lenograstim, Neupogen

What are the common treatments for prostatitis?… by pnut19

March 4, 2007 · Filed Under maxaquin · Comment

I was diagnosed with prostatitis and I was wanting to know what the common treatments are to resolve this problem. The doctor has already put me on 2 rounds of antibiotics and is sending me to a urologist. I just want to know that the options are for this problem.

Best Answer:

Same when I had it. One antibiotic was maxaquin, don't remember the other. They also gave me some pyridium to ease the battery-acid pissing thing. Over the counter it's called prodium, it's like pepto-bismol for your peepee.

Can i take ibuprofen if i'm taking proquin?… by Lady

March 4, 2007 · Filed Under proquin · Comment

Well i have a uti and my doctor prescribed me proquin to get me better but one of the side effects of proquin is constant headaches. : ( And i hate it! So my question is does anyone know if its alright if i can take ibuprofen for the proquin side effects? I'm not sure if i should because i dont know if its safe or not? Any help would be great thanks.

Best Answer:

No, proquin is an antibacterial whereas ibuprofen is a pain killer from the family of non steroidal anti inflammatory agents. You were given proquin (ciprofloxacin) to treat infection. Therefore you should continue taking it as your doctor advised.

I don't think your head ache is caused by the drug proquin, but is an effect of fever and uti that caused it. For headache it would be better to take an aspirin / disprin which is safer than brufen

what is the difference between Actonel and Fossamax?… by divad

March 3, 2007 · Filed Under actonel · Comment

I have osteopenia and had to go off the Actonel because of diarreha and severe heart burn. Is Fossamax any different from Actonel in this regard? Also does taking calcium make the stool “loose”?

Best Answer:

I cannot tell you from experience.

But I can tell you that I have had a problem with IBS and my colon. High levels of sodium cause loose stool/ diarrhea. Check the insert for both medications. Compare it to other elements found in other medications. Very high levels of Sodium is used in stool softeners and in that jug you have to take before going in for a colon check.

Variations of Sodium are also a preservative and used in McDonalds food which is known for causing diarrhea.

From what I saw, both Actonel and Fossamax have variations of sodium in them and should keep you from getting constipated.

Consider other factors in your diet as well as stress,. You might also have IBS. IBS is triggered by a combination of unusually high amounts of stress combined with poor diet and is often times triggered by the onset of other health problems.

Note that these all medication is an adjunctive therapy and not a primary treatment modality

What is the best over the counter medicine to take for seasonal allergies?… by B

March 1, 2007 · Filed Under flonase · Comment

Not Claritin though. It doesn't help me any!
My eyes are killing me. They are so itchy and blurry! And I am sneezing a lot and my nose is runny!
I dont have a cat. I am allergic to them.

Best Answer:

Claritin really is the best thing going for over the counter meds, effective and no drowsiness. If that doesn't do the trick for you, you should consider the prescription Singulair. Some people have to take both. Benedryl just makes most people too tired, can try sudafed, actifed, and any number of other preparations, but typically they don't do as good a job, but you can always just grab a few boxes and then try them all and see if any of those does it for you.
Another option is a nasal spray, prescription flonase, which is a steroid, may work for you. Also there is one over the counter nasal spray that contains cromlyn sodium, what is called a mast cell stabilizer, it might work well for you.

Anyway, maybe one of these will help in your situation.
